Sleep, ADHD and the Brain

"If we don’t get enough sleep, it makes us feel lonelier, and it fundamentally messes with the way we perceive other people, and how we interact with them." Shuka Kalantari from The Science of Happiness episode 116.

I have read so much research regarding sleep, especially with regards to Turbo Thinkers. We already know so much about how sleep affects our bodies and our brains, how it affects us physically and cognitively.

In this interview, The Science of Happiness: The Science of a Good Night’s Sleep, with Eti Ben Simon who is a neuroscientist and sleep expert, we learn that sleep affects us socially as well. A lack of sleep results in loneliness. It causes emotional imbalance and mood impairments. Sleep loss increases our desire to draw inwards to disconnect, which can lead to depression.

Lack of sleep also affects our ability to be sensitive to what other people think and want. In essence, it reduces our sense of empathy. Moreover, people who come into contact with people who are sleep deprived choose not to interact or collaborate with them, and this reinforces loneliness further.

You really do deserve a good night’s rest.
