5 Ways for Turbo Thinkers© to Find Intrinsic Motivation in the New Year

Setting and achieving goals requires a different approach when wired with a Turbo Thinking brain. When our goals are motivated by fear, such as fear of consequence, fear of disappointing others, or fear of not being good enough, we put ourselves in crisis mode so that our cortisol levels skyrocket.

This creates an unhealthy and unsustainable lifestyle that impacts both ourselves and the people around us. When our goals are motivated by love, we can create the space and the energy to achieve them, helping both ourselves and others. Cheesy but true. What is your love? How do you find your why? How do you want to feel? Who do you want to be?

Moreover, how can we phrase our answers with positive language? For example, instead of, “I want to not feel stressed and overwhelmed. I want to lose weight. I want to not be late.” We can choose to say, “I will feel confident and calm. I will feel healthy and strong. I will feel in control of my actions.” The brain reacts to our inner dialogue. When we use positive self talk, we stimulate our executive functioning skills, necessary to achieve the goals we set for ourselves.

Once we get clear on our intrinsic motivation, the path to achieve the goal will reveal itself. It could be a variety of paths or a twisty turning path or a very scenic path. No one says we have to take the same worn path with hordes of tourists. We can give ourselves permission to embrace our wackiness and do it our own way. What path do you choose, to arrive at the greatest manifestation of who you are?
