Ways to Improve Skills as a Turbo Thinker©

“Why can’t I just do it?”  “Why am I so bad at this?” When clients first call, I hear this all the time. There are many coaching strategies to reverse a negative mindset and push through limited beliefs. In the short term, I try to use a two pronged approach.

Embrace a growth mindset.

How can you change, “I suck at this,” to “I’m not good at this YET!”? Dogged persistence can be a Turbo Thinker strength when the interest is there, but ask yourself, How important is it to you? I can honestly say that for all of my clients, where there is a will, there is a way! Of course, it is unrealistic to expect that everything will go perfectly the first time. It takes a long time and a lot of practice to develop a new habit. It also takes a lot of failures to get it right. As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps." Remember that you are the inventor of your life’s journey.

Work with your strengths.

How can you change, “I suck at this,” to “I am good at that?” Sometimes we forget what we are good at. We may think, “Well, isn’t everyone good at that?” not realizing, “No. That’s pretty unique to be able to do that so effortlessly.” So while we may need to exert extra effort on tasks that require executive function skills, we may shine in other areas. Where do you shine?

In addition to the strengths that most Turbo Thinkers possess, each person has unique strengths that can be used in times of adversity. Just like each one of us has a unique set of fingerprints, we all have unique strengths that we can employ to put our stamp on the Earth and make our world a better place. For example, is humor your top strength? How can you use humor to plan the company meeting that you’ve been avoiding? How can you use humor to organize your closet? What are your top strengths? How can you use these to make your tasks easier? See it as a puzzle! After all, you are a turbo thinker, a master puzzle solver!
