The Importance of Meditation
For us Turbo Thinkers, a little bit of meditation can go a long way. I like to think of my meditation practice like sitting with a cute, curious, cuddly puppy. The puppy sits in front of us, then wanders away. It can waddle or pounce or spring, but it’s so cute! It’s in its nature to wander off. We gently pick it up and bring it back. It will surely wander off again, and we simply pick it up and bring it back. Such is the Turbo Thinker’s mind. It wanders off. Without any judgment whatsoever, we can gently bring it back.
Meditation can provide many benefits, including:
lowering blood pressure
reducing stress
managing anxiety
controlling pain
improving attention
strengthening memory
improving self-image
enhancing self-awareness
improving sleep
Most of these benefits relate to our executive function and emotional regulation skills: the ones most affected by ADHD. Simply put, meditation is focus training. It thickens our prefrontal cortex, the part that's involved in attention, planning, and impulse control. It also raises our dopamine levels, which Turbo Thinkers crave. Fortunately for us, meditation is about practice and not perfection. There is no one way to do it right. Like a puppy, we get to wander off and play, then come back and just start over.
