Getting Out of Your Own Head

As Turbo Thinkers, we spend a lot of time living in our heads. Because of our super creative imaginations, we fabricate fascinating fables and alternate realities that are just so believable. In fact, we are sometimes like floating heads, with no connection to our physical bodies, as our minds race into the future and experience catastrophe, rejection, and pain in all sorts of ways. We fly through different scenarios of doom, like a Choose Your Own Adventure novel, only none of the endings are happy. All of this Turbo Thinking can cause us to freeze, like a marble statue, unable to take the next step in the real world outside of our heads. This process feels like a lot of action and it can be exhausting, but, in terms of deliverables, nothing has actually been executed.

How to end the paralysis and move forward?

  • What if we could change the narrative and turn around the scripts that emphasize our limitations and disastrous endings? We have incredible imaginations that can be used to create positive scenarios as well. It is equally likely that a positive outcome will unfold. Imagine what that looks like. How does that positive experience feel?

  • Remember your wins. You have a bank of evidence of successes, both big and small. How did you make those happen? What strategies can you replicate?

  • What is the objective? Why are we doing this task in the first place? How does it align with our purpose?

  • Take one step at a time. What exactly is the very first step? Can you make it very specific? How long might that take? For example, “organize holiday party” might start with “text Chris,” and that might take only 30 seconds.

  • How can you gamify the task? If our brains aren’t having fun, it’s not going to happen. How can you change the environment, the people, or the method to make it easier and more appealing? Who can help you or simply be at your side to keep you company?

When we freeze and notice ourselves avoiding a certain task, we can get curious and, with self compassion, explore what might support us in moving forward. One small step can be success enough.
