The Beauty of the Unknown

According to Dr. Russell Ramsay, anxiety is the #1 emotion experienced by people with ADHD. He defines it as: “the intolerance of uncertainty.” What can we do when our brain type is consistently inconsistent? We certainly don't enjoy the feeling of worry, so our #1 emotional issue is how to tolerate discomfort. Luckily our feelings change, but how can we remember that they are not permanent in the moment of pain?

We can ask ourselves: What might be some positive aspects of our current emotion? How much of it is helpful? How much is excessive? What do we choose to call the emotion we feel at that moment? What mindfulness practice might help us observe the feeling in order to change our relationship with it and highlight its impermanence? How can we stay committed to our valued goal despite the emotion? How can we use distanced self talk to connect with the bigger picture? What does our future self say about this sensation or situation? What is our role in this? Our emotions are not our fault, but they are our responsibility. How can we be assertive and advocate for ourselves to move in the right direction?

What may begin as nervousness about the unknown, can become excitement to fulfill your purpose. I don’t know about you, but I’ll take joy, confidence, ease and calm over anxiety any day.
