Be Present This Holiday Season

This time of year provides even the most disciplined of Turbo Thinkers with deadly distractions and temptations. There are so many delicacies to taste and sip, so many presents from which to choose! Our devices push content at us that convinces our brains that we should be spending money and lots of it… because look at how much we can save! Since when did Black Friday and Cyber Monday become a commercial bonanza starting the day after Halloween?

Our Turbo Thinking brains thrive within a structure that aligns with our values and purpose. What structures can we create, what guidelines and parameters can we clearly define for ourselves, to avoid endless scrolling and spending this time of year? We can start by asking ourselves: For whom are we shopping? What is our budget? What are the minimum requirements for the gift? What is good enough, so that we can move on? How long do we want to spend on this? We can define our limits for both time and money. Most importantly, what is our objective or motivation?

Remember all of the art projects that we made in elementary school? That pencil holder made of a painted toilet paper cardboard tube? That ornament made of popsicle sticks, glitter, and pipe cleaners? Maybe I’ll just do that again this year. After all, it’s the thought that counts!
