Dancing in September

Many of us abide by the academic calendar rather than one beginning in January. For us, the start of the school year marks a fresh beginning, or at least the end of summer. It can also cause of sense of dread - even though the temperature may still be a steamy 95 degrees, school has begun. Some students may be online in virtual classes, some may be studying on campus in person, and some might be in a hybrid model. All students are getting used to a new routine. And for those living at home, it means that the whole family must adjust.

Recent conversations with clients have revealed that:

  • For the day to run smoothly, we need to start strong.

  • To kick off the day well, we need a consistent morning routine.

  • For the morning to run smoothly, we need to set up for success the night before.

  • For consistency, we need a bedtime routine.

  • In order to follow these routines, we need to remember them.

  • To trigger our memory, we may need a checklist or other visual reminder.

  • For accountability, the whole family needs to co-create the plan, execute as a team and celebrate together.

Many Turbothinkers struggle with both decision making and early morning brain fog. By making as many decisions as possible the night before, you reduce the chances of messing up your morning. What can you decide every night before you go to bed? What is your exercise schedule? What is your work schedule? What do you need? What can be placed on your nightstand? What will get you up and out of the bed on time? What will you wear tomorrow? What will you have for breakfast? What do you need to take to work or to school? What can you pack and place by the door? What are the tasks that you will complete in the morning? What is the very first step of the very first task? What can you do to avoid distractions and get started immediately? How can you stay on track?

Most importantly, how are you going to make it all fun? If it’s not fun, it’s not going to happen. Earth, Wind & Fire said it best: Hey hey hey. Ba de ya, say that you remember. Ba de ya, dancing in September. Ba de ya, never was a cloudy day. Ba duda, ba duda, ba duda, baduBa duda, badu, ba duda, badu.
