A Moment for Perspective

How do you want to feel? In many initial consults, clients begin to list all of their shortcomings, negative traits, challenges and inabilities. They often begin to list all of the major tasks they have failed to complete, or even begin. They wallow in how awful they feel, stuck in a spiral of shame and overwhelm.

One of the skills that clients learn through coaching is how to interrupt the pattern of negative belief systems that prevent any action or growth. How can you harness the power of the pause to hit the brakes on the emotions flooding the brain? How can you get your prefrontal cortex back into the game, releasing it from the amygdala’s hostage cell? How can you feel good about yourself?

Why do we want to create a positive state of mind? A positive mindset is the footprint for neuroplasticity. It allows you to access your executive function skills and processing modalities. It allows you to get in touch with your most authentic self and provides the motivation to become the deliberate creator of your own life. When you can find evidence of your past successes and tap into the positive feelings generated by them, you can use those feelings to propel yourself into your vision of the future. You can allow yourself to not only dream big, but to believe that you have all it takes to transform your vision into reality.

Take a moment to envision your ideal day, your ideal relationship, your ideal work or your ideal space. How does it feel to have that? How does it feel to be your future self? Sit in that feeling. Isn’t it wonderful? It’s yours already. You are already there. I believe in you. Can you believe in you too?
