Positive Affirmations for Turbo Thinkers©

As Turbo Thinkers, our minds can easily go down a road of negativity, regret, self shame or catastrophizing. In those moments when our emotions override all rational thought, our memories have trouble accessing what we know to be true about ourselves. Our minds can get stuck in a story told by the severe inner critic, the mean girl whispering in our ear, or the evil judge who deems us unworthy of any future success. As adults with ADHD, how can we drown out those voices and change the inner dialogue? Welcome, positive affirmations! In my experience, the best affirmations for Turbo Thinkers are the ones we create ourselves.

What is the negative belief in your head? What would the opposite be? If your inner voice tells you that you are weak, slow and ugly, can you retort with “I am strong, fast and gorgeous!”? How can you remember, “I am worthy.” or “I am good enough.” How can you remember your strengths and talents rather than your inadequacies? How can you remember what you can control rather than what you can’t? There are many systems for remembering your affirmations on the go, be it a post-it on your dashboard, a screensaver on your desktop or a daily reminder on your phone.

What affirmations would serve you best? What are the unique strengths that will help you succeed and feel good about yourself? Here are some examples: I am a creative problem solver. My curiosity and love of learning support my growth. I have a zest for life. I appreciate beauty and excellence in all things. I have the capacity to quickly generate innovative ideas. I can use my intuition to guide me. Sometimes we need to say the words out loud to drown out the fear of failure or rejection.

For example, I have the power to choose my thoughts and my actions. I embrace change because change is a natural aspect of life and I choose life. Where focus goes, energy flows. There are so many ways to have fun with affirmations. The last thing we want to do is judge ourselves for needing affirmations! Why be embarrassed about playing? There is no perfect way to do it. I sometimes listen to a guided meditation of positive affirmations to start my day and jump start my mindset. Try them in different languages or with different background music. Affirmations don’t need to be serious or boring, and definitely not negative. Challenge that inner critic and tell them to be quiet or pack their bags and get out of town!
