Our Podcast Episode is Live!
October has finally arrived! While it doesn’t feel anything like fall in New Orleans, we have nevertheless begun ADHD Awareness Month worldwide. This implies not only awareness for those directly affected by ADHD, but also for those “neurotypicals” that might not get it. This is what came to mind, when I met Molly Thayer, host of the Control Freak podcast. How can a control freak, someone who is a linear thinker, organizer, planner and ringmaster extraordinaire, better understand and communicate with a Turbo Thinker? How can you refrain from saying, “Why can’t you just do it?” “If you would only do this instead!” “You have so much potential!” “If you would do it my way, you would succeed.” How can you realize that the Turbo Thinker in your life is not broken and does not need to be fixed? How can you open your mind to understand that they might see the world in a different way? That, in fact, they might see thousands of possibilities more than you can? How can you demonstrate patience, compassion, but most of all curiosity. How can you express wonder and trust? And instead of demanding that it get done in one specific way, asking how might it get done differently? Passionately? Beautifully? Uniquely?
While we didn’t get the chance to cover everything in this week’s episode, we did touch upon other topics such as executive function skills, the effects of technology on the brain, and how to spark intrinsic motivation. Listen in to hear how Molly experienced a shift in mindset live on the podcast!
