New Resources

People tell me all the time, “I think I have ADHD too.” Maybe you do. Maybe you don’t. Do you feel that you could be accomplishing more, working more efficiently and contentedly? As a coach specializing in executive function skills, I can help you with that. And yet, some people still want to know. These online quizzes present short and simple questions that can point towards the possibility of ADHD or Executive Dysfunction deficit. They are not a complete medical evaluation, which can cost anywhere from $500-$5000 out-of-pocket, but serve as a great baseline to understand what is going on. Unfortunately, there is no single magical test. A comprehensive evaluation is necessary to establish a diagnosis, rule out other causes, and determine the presence or absence of co-existing conditions. It should include a careful history and clinical assessment of your academic, social and emotional functioning and developmental level.

According to the CHADD website:

There are several types of professionals who can diagnose ADHD, including clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, nurse practitioners, neurologists, psychiatrists, and pediatricians. Regardless of who conducts the evaluation, the use of the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for ADHD is necessary.

As part of the evaluation, a physician should conduct a thorough examination, including assessment of hearing and vision to rule out other medical problems that may be causing symptoms similar to ADHD. In rare cases, persons with ADHD may also have thyroid dysfunction. Diagnosing ADHD in an adult requires an evaluation of the history of childhood problems in behavior and academic domains, as well as an examination of current symptoms and coping strategies.

It’s not fast, cheap or easy to get a true diagnosis of ADHD or Executive Dysfunction. The question is: Do you really need one? If you need the required paperwork for academic accommodations, then the answer is yes. If you have the desire for happiness, balance, and fulfillment, then no. If you want to achieve different results and gain control of your life on your own terms, then spend your time and money on coaching instead.
