Let's Be Efficient

We all have things to do and limited time in which to do them. So you have the choice to run around like a chicken with your head cut off or to stay calm and carry on. The difference lies in planning and preparation.

  • Decide what needs to be done. What is the absolute minimum that needs to be done?

  • What is the deadline? By when does it need to be done? For yourself? For others?

  • How will you feel when it’s done? Describe that feeling in detail.

  • What is the consequence if it’s not done? How will you feel then?

  • How long do you think it will take to complete? Should it be broken into smaller chunks with breaks, to manage your energy levels?

  • What will you do during breaks? Can it be a physical activity, preferably outdoors?

  • What is the reward when it’s done? How can you treat yourself in a healthy manner?

  • What distractions do you anticipate? How can you remove them ahead of time?

  • Who can be your accountability partner? Who can shadow you or look over your shoulder so that you are encouraged to stay on task?

  • Which mindfulness practice can you do for a few minutes before you begin? How can you get into the zone of focus?

  • How can you turn the activity into a game? Will you need a timer or music? If your brain doesn’t think it’s fun, it won’t want to do it.

Now you are ready. On your mark. Get set. Go! No squawking necessary.
